Have you or someone you care about experienced domestic violence? If so, looking for resources can take a lot of time and be emotionally draining. We are not a domestic violence shelter ourselves but we have put together a list of resources for you. Below you will also find external support for men, women, youth, parents, LQBTQ+ people, and help for those trying to manage their abusive behaviour.

Government Resources

GOV.UK provides guidance on getting help for domestic abuse. This site helps you identify signs of abuse and potential resources for getting help and support.

Police Scotland also provides guidance for recognizing and reporting abuse.

The NHS also provides extensive information about recognizing signs of abuse, getting help, helping a friend or loved one, and more.

Resources for Women

Women’s Aid (and Scottish Women’s Aid) is a large, cross-UK resource for women and children experiencing abuse. They have a wealth of online resources and help centres around the UK. They offer online live chats with domestic violence workers, a survivors chat forum, and a survivors handbook (amongst other resources).

Refuge provides similar assistance, as well as a 24-hour national helpline.

Rights of Women offers legal advice on domestic and sexual violence.

Southall Black Sisters offers support for BIPOC individuals experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

SignHealth – Domestic Abuse Services specifically assists deaf people in the UK.

Finding Legal Options for Women (FLOW) helps women and mothers find legal support to escape abuse.

Resources for Men

ManKind Initiative provides support for men escaping domestic violence. ManKind also provides a helpline. They also offer legal support for men escaping abuse.

SurvivorsUK is a helpline for men who have experienced sexual abuse or rape. SurvivorsUK hosts online chats and SMS text-based chats.

Men’s Sheds Association hosts sheds (groups) all around the UK that allow men to connect and gain support. Sheds usually support various activities, ranging from simple social gatherings to game nights and woodshop sessions. Resources for Youth

Galop offers services to LGBTQ+ people experiencing domestic violence and they have services specifically for youth aged 13-25.

Rise services to LGBTQ+ people experiencing domestic violence. Rise provides resources for early childhood (under 6), children (6-12), and youth (13+).

SurvivorsUK is a service for men and boys that offer assistance and a helpline for youth aged 13-18.

The Hide Out is a resource offered by women’s aid for children and young people impacted by domestic violence.

Childline offers support online and over the phone for struggling young people, including those impacted by domestic violence.

Children’s Hearings are a unique legal system in Scotland designed to support children and young people facing challenging situations, including the experience of Domestic Abuse (further information for youths here). If you feel you would benefit from a hearing, you can contact the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration to make a referral for yourself.

Resources for Parents

YoungMinds provides resources for children experiencing abuse and parents with kids impacted by abuse.

Children’s Hearings are a unique legal system in Scotland designed to support children and young people facing challenging situations, including the experience of Domestic Abuse (further information for parents here). If your child has been exposed to violence or abuse in the home, your child might be given a hearing to decide what is best for them going forward (i.e., where they will live, if they will have contact with an abusive parent, etc.). Cases are referred to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration by a concerned party, and anyone can make a referral.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children provides resources for current and expecting parents, including resources on overcoming abusive behaviour that does (or has) impacted your children.

LGBTQ+ Resources

Galop offers services to LGBTQ+ people experiencing domestic violence and they have services specifically for youth aged 13-25.

Resources for Minoritised Ethnicities

Opoka specializes in helping women and children in the Polish community experiencing Domestic Abuse. They offer a helpline, legal support, and other programming.

AMINA is a resource centre for Muslim women with programming specifically for those experiencing Domestic Abuse. They offer a helpline, one-on-one support, and group sessions/workshops focused on overcoming abusive relationships.

Saheliya is a specialist mental health and well-being support organization for black, minority ethnic, asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women and girls (12+) in the Edinburgh and Glasgow area. They offer counselling, child support, and one-on-one assistance to escape Domestic Abuse.

Unseen/Modern Slavery is a helpline specializing in helping ethnic minority and immigrant women escape exploration, forced marriage, and human trafficking. They also offer consultation/education for immigrant women to build awareness of the dangers of human trafficking and how to protect one’s self.

Shakti Women’s Aid offers support to racial and ethnic minority women and children who have or are experiencing Domestic Abuse. They have a helpline and online resources available in many different languages, including (but not limited to) Arabic, Hindi, Polish, Portuguese, and Swahili.

Karma Nirvana is a national Honour Based Abuse helpline that connects survivors with services in their area.

Getting help to stop your own abusive behaviour

Respect Phoneline offers support and advice to those who wish to overcome their abusive behaviour, including online chats and email support.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers support and advice to those who wish to overcome their abusive behaviour.
